Road to the Revolutionary War

We are working on the Revolutionary War right now in my 5th grade class.  Since our 5th grade Social Studies textbook is not the best in the world (reading level is about 8th grade and the content is hit or miss), I find myself creating a lot of the materials we use in class. When we read out of the book, it is usually just a paragraph or two and then I supplement it with things I’ve made, online video clips, or other books that align to the topic.

Actually, I have found that I really enjoy this approach, and my students love the variety!
Our “Road to the Revolutionary War” unit has been great fun. As we learned about each major event that led to the War for Independence, we added a section to our Interactive notebooks. We have also spent a good amount of time talking about how history is a long chain of causes and effects.
Here is a look at how we constructed our own “Roads to the Revolutionary War” in our notebooks:
Then, to reinforce the sequence of events, we constructed our own timelines, which I later added to our classroom bulletin board.

Finally, we added the large pennant timeline banner to the top of the board, using chronological sequencing of the events.

You can either make your own foldables and timelines, or if you are interested in my ready-made Road to the Revolutionary War Packet with ALL of these components, check it out HERE.
