Hello, my wonderful teacher-friends! Checking in among the chaos to talk about setting up a 4th grade math escape room in your classroom for maximum fun! I am a huge advocate for escape room resources for all of the things from reading skills review to math because they can really mix things up and keep students engaged! Now, let’s talk a little bit about how to set up a fun 4th grade math escape room!

Setting Up a 4th Grade Math Escape Room

Step 1:

The first step to setting up a successful 4th grade math escape room is deciding if you want students to complete the challenge in teams or individually! I loved putting my students in teams of 3-4 for a math escape room. It is a great time for team work! I could see these escape rooms also being fun in partners to mix it up! I know that sometimes large groups get to be a lot, but escape rooms are so flexible!

Step 2:

Make your copies ahead of time! Having all of your copies of activities, tasks, and awards printed for each group is a huge time saver that makes using a 4th grade math escape room seamless and easy for you! Expect to print one copy of each activity or page for each group plus an extra set! I always felt so accomplished when I had my copies ready ahead of time. What a relief!

Step 3:

Organize your copies of the activities in the order in which students will complete them. After starting the escape room with your students, things are likely to pick up and get pretty competitive so I strongly advise having the tasks and awards in separate piles ready to hand out as students race through the challenge! The excitement in the classroom is even more enjoyable when you are prepared and ready for the chaos!

Step 4:

Clarify instructions for the escape room before handing out materials. Because a 4th grade math escape room is designed to capture students’ attention and inspire competition and fun with learning, things tend to speed up immediately after students receive their first task! You could even make things even more straight forward by posting the directions on the board as a reminder! We all know students will need the reminders.

Step 5:

Have escape room items prepared for teams to finish their tasks. Hand students their associated items after they complete each task so that they have a sense of how close they are getting to completing the challenge! Students will be excited to start collecting their checkpoint rewards as they grow closer to completing the challenge!

Final Step!

Prize time! The award certificates and prize labels are already printed (thanks to your past self), so the last thing to do is choose a prize like candy or even stickers or erasers to hand out with the certificates to students for completing the escape room challenge! If you don’t have prizes, the award certificates alone are fun for students to receive and collect as they complete escape rooms throughout the school year.

Are you feeling ready to set up a fun 4th grade math escape room? Time to practice these steps with a fun variety of 4th grade math escape rooms! think they are a BLAST, and I would love to hear if you try out an escape room activity with your own students! Wishing you all the best with the school year! If all else fails with beginning of the year review, test prep, or even end of year math review, try an escape room!
