9 Fresh and Exciting PBL Project Ideas

Throughout the school year, I know I would often find myself scrambling for ways to keep my students engaged in their learning and jazz up our classroom routine. As the sun starts shining brighter and summer is in the air, students are restless, and so are we… but the show must go on! Learning must continue, but can be done in an engaging and fresh way with hands on, creative project based learning resources! Grab a few of these PBL project ideas to finish out the year and enjoy watching your students engage in their learning and demonstrate their hard earned skills!

  1. Start a Smoothie Stand PBL

This project based learning resource includes activities for students to practice both writing and math in a fun and creative way while practicing essential skills! Not only is this PBL project idea a great way for students to practice their skills, but starting a smoothie stand is a great way to celebrate the spirit of summer!

2. Create a Planet PBL

This is another great PBL project idea where students get to work on cross-curricular skills including both language arts and math, but also science as students have the chance to think and dream like an astronomer!

3. Water Park End of Year PBL

This end of year PBL is sure to make a splash in your classroom! What better way is there to bring on the spirit of summer while continuing to learn than planning a water park? From creating a park playlist to solving word problems for concessions, this PBL is a great way for students to practice both language arts and math skills while dreaming of jumping into the pool!

4.National Parks Research PBL

Maybe students are getting excited to see a national park as one of their summer adventures! Engage them in some fun, no-prep activities to keep their geography, math, and language arts skills sharp while researching some of the national parks in preparation for a summer of adventure!

5. Hot Cocoa Stand Business PBL

I know a hot cocoa stand doesn’t necessarily scream summer, but this PBL project idea is such a fun way to get students thinking as if they were business owners! The creativity really flows with this one, and it’s a great way to have students practicing for any lemonade stands they may want to start on the upcoming sunny days where hot cocoa isn’t needed!

6. Design a Haunted House PBL

Again, a haunted house doesn’t scream summer, but this is one of my favorite PBL project ideas! Students get to practice their writing and problem-solving skills while mapping out and creating their own haunted house! Having this one in your back pocket for the school year is a sure way to be a hit!

7. Restaurant Menu PBL

Through designing menus, planning social media posts, advertising and more, this unit is sure to have students thinking in a new way while demonstrating their math and writing skills along with creativity! This resource requires no prep and has provided scoring rubrics to power through that end-of-year slump!

8. Plan a Roadtrip PBL

Another great way to culminate summer? Road trips! Students have the opportunity to prepare a packing list, map a road trip, and more while practicing their language arts and geography skills using this no-prep, hassle-free resource!

9. Thanksgiving Project PBL

Once again, a Thanksgiving PBL project idea does not exactly scream “Hello summer,” but I just love throwing in holiday resources to have throughout the year. As holidays approach, students are restless and need to be engaged in some exciting activities. With this PBL unit, they can design and plan a Thanksgiving Day parade while brushing up on their math and language arts skills!

While not all of the PBL project ideas discussed are directly related to summer, these hands-on, creative projects are sure to keep students interested, while taking the hassle out of planning and prepping for us teachers! Whether students are restless leading up to a holiday or excited for summer break, I can’t recommend having some PBL project ideas in your back pocket enough!
