Are you ready for some super-fun place value activities for 4th grade? Teaching place value to upper elementary students is a critical step in their mathematical development! Just because it is important does not mean its always exciting for students, which is why I’ve created a list of 15 of my favorite place value activities for 4th grade!
Place Value Activities for 4th Grade
1.Math Centers with Place Value
These 4th grade math centers are great for review, practice, or learning a new skill! There are seven different centers with instructions that act as great place value activities for 4th grade! Centers are a great way to keep students moving and busy while practicing math skills.
2. Place Value Bingo
Create bingo cards with numbers in various place values. Call out different place values and have students mark the corresponding numbers. This is a fun way to get students to practice quickly identifying place value in larger numbers.Â
3. Place Value War
Use a deck of cards where students draw cards to create the largest number possible by strategically placing them in different place values. This is one of my favorite place value activities for 4th grade!
This digital place value game show is so easy to use! All you have to do is display the slides and play! Students will then get to choose a question related to place value or number form, answer it and check their answer!
5. Expanded Form Match-Up
 Provide students with cards that have numbers and their corresponding expanded forms. They can practice matching them correctly in this simple place value activity for 4th grade!
6. Place Value Spinners
Create spinners with different place values. Students spin to generate numbers and practice identifying place values. After some basic place value review, have students practice adding and subtracting the numbers they spin to create!
7. Place Value Puzzles
Create puzzles where students match numbers to their word forms, expanded forms, and standard forms. This is great review for going from one form to another to get students feeling like experts!
8. Place Value and Number Form Worksheets
This resource contains place value charts, worksheets, activities, as well as number form work! Not only is it no prep, but it contains several great place value activities for 4th grade students!
9. Number Creation Challenge
Give students digits and challenge them to create the largest or smallest number possible. Challenge students to compete with a partner or even have races as they get more comfortable.Â
10. Place Value Detective
Give students a list of clues about a mystery number’s digits and place values. They must use the clues to figure out the number. For example, “The digit in the hundreds place is 3 less than the digit in the tens place.”
11. Place Value Number Match
Give students a collection of numbers on cards and have them arrange them face down. The goal with this place value activity for 4th grade is for a student to pick up two cards with one number of the same place value on each card. For example, 145 and 742 would be a matching pair.Â
12. Place Value Escape Room
 Design an escape room scenario where students must solve a series of place value puzzles to “escape” the room. Puzzles could include multi digit addition or subtraction problems, multiplication, number arrangement, or whatever students need to practice!
13. Equivalent Groupings Activity
Give students a 3 digit number and ask them to show it using manipulatives or base ten blocks. Then challenge students to show the same number in a different way and ask them to find out how many different ways they are able to demonstrate the same number.Â
14. Human Number Line
Use students. to create a human number line. Assign each student a digit and have them stand in the correct place value position to form different numbers.Â
15. Place Value Scavenger Hunt
Hide numbers around the classroom. Students find the numbers and then organize them into a place value chart. They can then discuss or write about the value of each digit.Â
Finding ways to keep place value practice fun and fresh can be so challenging-especially in the upper elementary setting! Despite the challenges of keeping it fresh, place value review is so valuable and I hope that you are leaving here with some new ideas to take to your students!
