4 Constitution Day Activities for Upper Elementary

Constitution Day is celebrated on September 17 each year in the United States.  This day is set aside to remember the day that the United States Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787.  In 2004, a law was made that requires all educational institutions that receive federal funds to celebrate or teach about the Constitution on this day.  Here are four engaging Constitution Day Activities that you can easily use in your upper elementary classroom.

1. Reading About the Constitutional Convention

Start your Constitution Day lessons with this reading activity.  This mini-book gives students an overview of the writing of the Constitution in 1787.  The reader will introduce students to the important people and events of the Constitutional Convention.

2.  Constitution Facts & Figures

This fill in the blank activity is a great way to give your students an overview of the U.S. Constitution.  This stacking flap book goes great in an interactive notebook, a social studies journal or even as a simple foldable.  You can use this activity as an outline for your lesson, having students fill in the blank as you teach, or they can work together to find the answers.

3. Preamble Puzzles

Learning the words and meaning to the Preamble of the Constitution is an activity that you cannot go wrong with.  These important words lay the foundation for the rest of this governing document.  These Preamble puzzles will have students connecting the words of the Preamble to their meaning.  It is activities like this that truly help the students understand the Constitution, not just know about it.

4. U.S. Constitution Flip Book

Let your students pull all of their learning together with this U.S. Constitution Flip Book.  If you are short on time, this also makes a great overview activity too!  In this flip book, students will learn about the Constitution’s creation and its structure.   In addition, students will learn about amendments and how they effect the Constitution.  A great overview and summary for Constitution Day or any U.S. Government lesson.

Upper Elementary Constitution Day Activities

All of the Constitution Day activities are high on fact content but low on teacher prep.  Since upper elementary students are able to do all of the prep work, you can just copy the pages you want to use.   Then fill your day with  lessons and activities that provide your students with facts and a better understanding of the Constitution.
