End of Year Reading Escape Room
When most students think of the end of the school year, they also begin visualizing everything summer-related. This can mean baseball, camping, swimming, and yes. . . theme parks!
What better way to practice and reinforce important reading comprehension skills than through a fun, high-interest theme park reading escape room activity? This event will have your students reading and writing on comprehension skills in a various activities. Your students will be so engrossed in the activity at hand, they won’t even realize they are learning!
This end of year reading escape room activity requires NO locks, boxes, hidden items, or fancy set ups. It is simple and straightforward to save you time and stress.
Theme Park Reading Escape Challenge – How it Works:
1. Get your Theme Park Reading Escape Challenge ahead of time and read through the directions (it’s pretty simple and uncomplicated).
2. Build up some excitement prior to the activity. Tell students the day before that they are being invited to an exciting end of year reading escape room activity. You may even choose to decorate the classroom and play fun theme park/carnival music as students enter the room in the morning! Make this a learning event your students will always remember.
3. Make copies of all 5 task sheets and the main attraction collection sheet ahead of time. You will want one copy of each activity for each team or group. (I suggest groups of 3-4 students.)
4. You will provide each team with one task at a time, handed to them in the order given inside the packet. When they complete one activity, you will quickly check it. If it is 100% correct, you hand them the related theme park attraction for their collection sheet and the next task on the list. There are 5 tasks in this escape challenge:
- Task 1: The History of Theme Parks Informational Reading Passage and Questions
- Task 2: Amusement Park Fact and Opinion
- Task 3: Famous Rollercoasters (Read a Table)
- Task 4: Theme Park Timeline
- Task 5: Wordsearch
5. Once all activities have been completed by a team and they have collected all the attractions, they are finished!
6. Provide finishing teams with award certificates and/or prizes. (Popcorn bag labeled with the included winning Theme Park Season Ticket Certificate make a great prize!)
