Hello amazing educators! I hope it’s warm and sunny where you are! Just checking in with some morning work ideas for when school time rolls back around! Having a consistent morning routine including engaging morning work is key to a great day of learning in the classroom, and I hope this inspires some ideas! I hope you get to read through these suggestions with a fun drink in hand!

Morning Work Ideas

Daily Journal Prompt

Provide thought-provoking prompts for students to reflect on or respond to in their journals. These could include personal reflections, creative writing prompts, or critical thinking questions related to current topics of study for the day! This is one of the most versatile morning work ideas!

Daily Morning Worksheet

This morning work packet is available for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade! Morning worksheets labeled by the day packed with ELA and math review content are sure to get your students thinking first thing in the morning! The beauty of these packets being made for 3 grade levels is that you can cater to your students who need extra review or even an extra challenge!

Daily Riddle or Brain Teaser

Stimulate critical thinking and problem-solving skills with a variety of brain teasers, riddles, or logic puzzles posted at the front of the room to start each day! Students can work individually or in partners to solve the challenge and feel excited about the day ahead- this is one of those morning work ideas that will keep everyone on their toes!

Quick Reading Response

Provide short reading passages or excerpts from texts relevant to the curriculum. Ask students to respond to a quick question, write a short summary, or discuss the prompt with a partner!

Creative Drawing or Doodling

Ease into the day by posting a drawing or doodle prompt for students to work on as everyone gets settled for the morning. This allows you and your students to get settled without missing any academic work! Trust me- sometimes these kinds of morning work ideas are much needed!

Projectable Morning Work

The same 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade morning work packets also include digital versions of all of the morning work to save on paper or offer a whole-class interactive approach! Being able to project each day’s work on the board for review or for students to follow is so handy!

Morning News

Start each day by projecting a current event or something interesting to share with your students! This really gets some great conversation going and leaves the kids with questions and ideas to take home and talk with family about!

Morning Meeting

Start the day with a brief morning meeting where students can share updates, express gratitude, or participate in community-building activities such as team-building games, icebreakers, or collaborative challenges. This builds a classroom family and sets the tone for a safe learning environment!

Progress Journaling

Provide students with a prompt relating to their progress so far this school year. They can write about things like “What have I improved on the most?” or even reflect on what they would like to practice more. Not only does this give you some great insight, but it teaches the students the art of self reflection!

Spelling or Vocabulary Review

Provide students with an opportunity to practice a few of their spelling or vocabulary words related to what you have been learning in class! This is a great opportunity for practice without worrying about a grade.

Starting the school day off on the right note is crucial for a great day of learning! Having some trusty morning work ideas in your back pocket is one of the my best recommendations for starting the school year. You never know when you will want to switch it up and I hope these ideas find you well and excited! You are amazing!
