Get to know your students activities

Farewell Summer… you will be dearly missed. Hello school year and all of the get to know your students activities that come with having a brand new class! The beginning of a new school year is scary yet exciting, stressful yet wonderful, and oh so very busy! To combat some of the craziness that is back to school season, I have compiled a list of 5 easy get to know your students activities for you to use in your classroom. I hope that you are able to find some ideas that get you excited for a brand new year.

Get to Know Your Students Activities

1) Have Each Student Make an Introductory Poster. Have each student create a poster about themselves that they can present to the class. This poster should include basic information such as name, age, hobbies, interests, and maybe even a picture of the student. As they share their posters with each other, it’s a great way for teachers and students alike to learn more about one another in an informal setting. What makes this activity even better is creating a poster as the teacher as well. This way students learn about you and are able to begin to form a connection!

2) Play “Two Truths and a Lie.” Everyone takes turns introducing themselves by sharing two true facts about them and one false fact. The class then has to guess which is the lie. This activity not only helps teachers learn more about their students at the beginning of the year, but also fosters an atmosphere of trust in the classroom. This is one of the great get to know your students activities that can be done as a class, with partners, or in small groups!

3) Have Each Student Share an Item from Home. Have each student bring in something special to share with the class. This could be a collection of seashells from a family vacation, a favorite book or toy, or even just their favorite snack. It’s an opportunity for students to showcase something unique and interesting about themselves. This is also a great way to get to know a little bit about your students’ families and homes as well!

4) Play “Guess Who.” Using facts students write about themselves, have the class or small groups play “guess who” after hearing a few clues about one of their classmates. If you wanted to add an extra element, you could print out small photos of each student and create your own “guess who” boards for the game! This is one of many get to know your students activities that can easily be made into a fun game where everyone wants to participate!

5) Create a Class Poster. Using a large piece of chart or bulletin board paper, have each students either draw a small self portrait or take a headshot of each student, then allow everyone to write a unique fact about themselves below their picture. Make sure to include a picture and fact about yourself as well! Put the finished product on display in the classroom for the first couple of weeks or even the whole school year! This is one of my favorite get to know your students activities that also doubles as classroom decor!
